Cherry Fever hits Hilltops

3/12/2019

The cherry harvest is well underway with the cherries sweet and tasty. This means that the Young National Cherry Festival is fast approaching, set for this weekend, December 6-8.

Will the longest Pip Spit record be broken again this year? Who will be the 2019 Cherry Pie Eating Champion? Who will be crowned Cherry Queen or King? And the big questions, how fast can you pick a lug of cherries? There is so much fun and entertainment in store at the Woolworths 2019 70th National Cherry Festival Young.

Organisers of this year’s event invite you to take part and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere.   Not only is there an action-packed program for the weekend itself, there are many fantastic fringe events leading up to the festival.

While there, why not pick your own cherries. Afterall, it is the delicious fruit that gives the town its reputation as the Cherry Capital of Australia. Cherries are one of the reasons Young is super busy at this time of year as the harvest takes place in the picturesque, undulating orchards.

Just as people came from across the globe to seek gold in the 1860’s, there is a rush of young and old today from many countries who are keen to take part in the cherry harvest.
Some come to work commercially, working alongside orchard owners to bring in the harvest. Many others come for fun, to experience the joy of a shared outdoor activity and to select their own fruit straight from the tree.

If you aren’t keen to try your hand at picking, there are plenty of orchard stalls with fresh boxed cherries for sale, and tempting cherry produce to buy.
