$1.2 million in funding announced for Wambanumba Bridge replacement

16/01/2019

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke this morning announced $1.2 million in funding for the replacement of Wambanumba Bridge.

Wambanumba Creek Bridge, on Murringo Road, was closed following a structural review which identified cracking in the bridge. It will be replaced with a new bridge which will have a higher load capacity.

Hilltops Mayor Brian Ingram thanked Ms. Cooke for her hard work in securing the funding and spoke about the importance of the bridge to the community. “This is a very important road, it is not only a freight route but a school bus route as well as being the route that connects the communities of Boorowa and Young. It is a relief to receive $1.2 million from the state government, this is a great start toward funding the replacement of the bridge” he said.

Replacing the bridge means truck drivers will be able to avoid a 40 kilometre detour which they currently make due to load restrictions on the sidetrack bypass.

“This is such a fantastic upgrade because it means 2000 heavy vehicles a year will not have to make a time-consuming and costly detour. The new bridge will allow heavy vehicles weighing more than 10 tonnes to travel on the most direct route between Murringo and Young for the first time in years, making freight movements more efficient” said Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke.
